Top 10 Coolest Vintage British Motorcycles 83

Recently new motorcycles made to look vintage have become all the rage. This trend covers everything from cruisers to cafe racers to dirt bikes. While many of these bikes are really cool, they just aren't nearly as cool as the original. Here are what I consider to be the best vintage bikes of British origin.

Vincent Black Shadow

1. Vincent Black Shadow

The Vincent Black Shadow is considered to be the ultimate dream bike by many people. It is extremely desirable and extremely expensive, selling frequently in excess of $60,000. Fewer than 1700 of these highly desirable bikes were made. They were popular race bikes and had astonishing performance for a production bike in their time.

2. Royal Enfield Bullet

The Royal Enfield Bullet has been in production for a very long time, having been in constant production since 1931. Production in the U.K. ended in 1960's and has been carrying on in India ever since. In the U.S. you can buy one of these bikes new from a Royal Enfield dealer. It does have good looks, but isn't known for having good quality anymore. These are a good way to get a vintage looking bike with some modern accessories.

Velocette Venom

3. Velocette Venom

The Velocette Venom was a 500cc single cylinder bike that was quite fast in its day. It still holds the 24hr speed record for bikes its size, 100.05mph average for 24 hours. It was made from 1955-1970 with areound 5700 total being made. Its not as rare as a Vincent Black Shadow, but it sure isn't common. These are very good looking bikes and were very well made.

4. Panther Model 100

These attractive bikes were made from 1932 to 1963. They were very stout and workman like. Top speed was around 70 mph, considerably slower than the other bike on this list. I like them because of their looks and their reputation for being good sturdy tranportation.

Norton Manx

5. Norton Manx

Norton made these bikes from 1946-1962. They were developed soley for winning the Isle of Man TT. Molnar Precision Limited bought the tooling for these bike and they are once again being produced to exact 1961 specs. Top speed was 150mph depending on gearing. I really like the way these bikes look and would love one for myself. In 1950 these bikes recieved the legendary Norton Featherbed frame, which gave them a considerable competitive advantage.

6. BSA Lightning

The Lightning was developed with the U.S. market in mind, and is suited well the our tastes. The 110mph top speed is more than adequite than most. The ride is smooth up to 5k rpm, when the vibration sets in. This bike is considered one of the most successful of all British motorcycles. It was features in the James Bond movie "Thunderball". Hunter S. Thompson also famously owned one.

7. Matchless Silver Streak

The Matchless Silver Streak entered production in 1938 and was a great machine. This is one of the few places where I think that massive amounts of chrome and polish are a good thing. Even the fuel and oil tanks are chromed on these. They were considered Super Sport bikes when they were new. They had close ratio gearboxes which made them potent on the road, and high ground clearance and low bottom gear which made them acceptable cross country.

I don't know a whole lot about these bikes, but they do look cool. They were made from 1932 to 1959. They gained a rear suspension in the 50's.

9. Triumph Bonneville

These bikes are the bikes that many people picture when they think English Motorcycle. These bikes were loved by the cafe racer crowd, and were modified in large numbers. The original Bonnevilles were made from 1959-1983. Triumph has recently started making a new Bonnevile, although it looks the same its a modern bike. These are fairly common still and are cheap compared to many bikes on this list. I know several people who use old Bonneville as daily drivers still.

Norton ES2

norton made the ES2 from 1927-1964. A very long stretch for such a traditional design. It was a Sports bike when it was initially produced but its performance was soon surpassed by other bikes. These bikes were well known for their reliability and how easy they were to repair. While the all look pretty old fashioned they were constantly updated during their production run.

World’s Most Expensive Car

World’s Most Expensive Car

A 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa has set a new world record for the most expensive car ever sold at auction, costing the buyer 9.02 million euros ($12.15 million), according to RM Auctions, which organized the event. The price, which includes a 10 percent buyer’s premium on top of the “hammer price,” is nearly 2 million euros more than the previous record set at a similar auction at Ferrari’s headquarters a year ago, it said in a statement.

Ferrari built just 22 Scaglietti-designed Testa Rossas with the signature pontoon fenders between 1957 and 1958. It was a formidable racer – a 300 horsepower V12 and nimble handling will do that – and Testa Rossas won 10 of the 19 races they entered between 1958 and 1961.

While Detonator may seem like a strange thing to name an SUV, what with terrorism in the news, Chrysler's name for this new Viper color seems equally odd given recalls of toys not too long ago for toxic paint.

Honda CR-Z

Honda is clearly in a slump, and we’ve certainly done our fair share to point it out: the lackluster Insight; ugly styling highlighted by uglier front grilles; a hybrid system that simply isn’t as advanced and effective as Toyota’s; a bloated Accord; no new direct injection engines; lots of muddling about future EVs; and a misplaced optimism about fuel cells. Honda (rightly) feels threatened by Hyundai and future competition from China. We’ve wondered openly if Hyundai has stolen Honda's engign mojo. Need I go on? This week only added to their (our) woes, with the ugly and underwhelming CR-Z. It’s time for a serious consideration as to what went wrong at Honda, and how to fix it. Honda; are you listening? (I suspect so)

Car 6 Top Speed in the World

Rank 1. SSC Ultimate Aero

The SSC Aero is an American-built mid-engine sports car by Shelby Super Cars. Its higher-performance limited production version, the SSC Ultimate Aero TT, is currently the fastest production car in the world, with a fastest recorded speed of 413 km/h (257 mph). This speed was reportedly achieved during tests on September 13, 2007 in West Richland, Washington, United States and verified by Guinness World Records on October 9, 2007.

The Aero and the Shelby Super Cars company are the brainchildren of Jerod Shelby, who spent over seven years designing the car. The basic Aero model is no longer produced, while, as of 2008, the Ultimate Aero costs about 620,000 dollars.

Rank 2. Bugatti Veyron

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is a mid-engine sports car produced by Volkswagen Group subsidiary Bugatti Automobiles SAS introduced in 2005. It is currently the fastest accelerating and decelerating production car in the world. It is currently also the most expensive production car available at a price of 1.1 million Euro. It is able to achieve the second highest top speed for a production car, behind the SSC Ultimate Aero TT .

Powered by a 736-kilowatt (1,001 PS/987 hp) W16 engine, it is able to achieve an average top speed of 408.47 km/h (253.81 mph). The car reached full production in September 2005, and is handcrafted in a factory Volkswagen built near the former Bugatti headquarters in Château St Jean in Molsheim (Alsace, France). It is named after French racing driver Pierre Veyron, who won the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1939 while racing for the original Bugatti firm. Two examples of the Veyron are known to have been wrecked since production began.

Rank 3. Koenigsegg CCX

The Koenigsegg CCX is a mid-engined roadster from Swedish car manufacturer Koenigsegg. The CCX has been engineered to comply with the US regulation and market demands and is an evolutionary design that replaced the Koenigsegg CCR. CCX is an abbreviation for Competition Coupe X; the X commemorating the 10th anniversary, (being the Roman numeral for ten), of the completion and test drive of the first CC vehicle in 1996.

The CCX was first unveiled on February 28, 2006 at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show although its existence was announced earlier. A derivative known as the CCXR is available, the difference being that CCXR's engine is tuned to run on biofuel. The different fuel and tune allows the CCXR to produce 25% more power than the CCX.

Rank 4. Saleen S7 Twin-Turbo

The Saleen S7 is a limited production, hand built high-performance automobile developed jointly by Saleen, Hidden Creek Industries, Phil Frank Design, and Ray Mallock Ltd. with RML taking full credit designing and developing the S7 and produced solely by Saleen in Irvine, California. It is the first car produced by Saleen not based on an existing design. The S7 debuted on August 19, 2000 at the Monterey Historic Races. From 2000 until 2004, the S7 featured a naturally aspirated V8 engine with 550 horsepower. In 2005, the S7 was replaced by the S7 Twin Turbo, which featured a more powerful twin-turbo system that boosted engine power to 750 horsepower (760 PS/559 kW) and the top speed to an estimated 250 mph (402 km/h).

Rank 5. McLaren F1

The McLaren F1 was formerly the fastest street legal production car in the world, holding this record from 1994 to 2005, the longest period the record has been held by any street legal or production car in the history of automobiles. It was engineered and produced by McLaren Automotive, a subsidiary of the British McLaren Group that, among others, owns the McLaren Mercedes Formula One team. Today, it is still the fastest naturally aspirated car in the world.

The McLaren F1 was at the time the fastest production car ever built, eclipsing the Jaguar XJ220. A standard version of the McLaren achieved a top speed of 371 km/h (231 mph) in 1994, holding this record for more than 10 years until it was finally eclipsed in 2005 by the Koenigsegg CCR.

Rank 6. Ferrari Enzo

The Enzo Ferrari is a 12-cylinder mid-engine berlinetta named after the company's founder, Enzo Ferrari. It is currently one of the most powerful naturally aspirated production car in the world. It was built in 2003 using Formula One technology, such as a carbon-fibre body, F1-style sequential shift transmission, and carbon-ceramic brake discs. Also used are technologies not allowed in F1 such as active aerodynamics and traction control. After a downforce of 775 kg (1709 lb) is reached at 300 km/h (186 mph) the rear wing is actuated by computer to maintain that downforce.
